日本於 12 月 2 日的世界盃分組賽中， 以 2 比 1 擊敗西班牙，成功進入 16 強，也令德國縁盡世界盃。當中最關鍵的是「零角度」底線傳球，極具爭議性。當時透過 VAR 進行覆核，確定當時足球在未完全出界的情況下已傳出，因此該入球有效。
事後，很多人對此判段表示不滿，為了讓公眾釋疑，FIFA 在其官方 Twitter 公開影片，當中以慢動作分析，可以看到球未完全出底線，因此也證實了 VAR 的準確性。
